One hundred years ago, Dr. Albert Abrams was the most celebrated physician in the United States.

He singlehandedly pioneered a revolutionary way of tackling illnesses and disease.\u00a0 \u201cThe spirit of the age is radio, and we can use radio in diagnosis,\u201d he declared. Thus Abrams created \u201cspancho-diagnosis,\u201d which involved the use of an electronic device called a dynamizer to analyze patients\u2019 blood samples.\u00a0

Abrams theorized that different diseases emitted different \u201celectronic reactions.\u201d\u00a0 He confidently claimed that his dynamizer could diagnose most diseases.\u00a0 Furthermore, a small sample of blood could typically reveal a patient\u2019s age, gender, and even religious affiliation.
\u00a0
Critics and rivals expressed their doubts.\u00a0
\u00a0
But as historian Rick Beyer points out: \u201cAbrams was lionized by a grateful nation.\u00a0 He lectured to packed crowds across the country.\u00a0 He leased out thousands of his machines, and made millions from his success.\u201d

Oh, and one other thing:\u00a0 He forbade anyone from looking inside one of his dynamizers.\u00a0
\u00a0
That\u2019s too bad, because what they would have found inside was, in the words of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Robert Millikan, \u201ca contraption which might have been thrown together by a ten-year-old boy who knows a little about electricity to mystify an eight-year-old boy who knows nothing about it.\u201d

Dr. Abrams, in other words, was a con artist.\u00a0 His dynamizer is considered the most spectacular hoax in American medical history.
\u00a0
The truth began to emerge when a representative of the American Medical Association asked one of Abrams\u2019 disciples to test a blood sample.\u00a0 The result indicated that the patient had malaria, syphilis, cancer, and diabetes.\u00a0 The sample was in fact from a Plymouth Rock rooster.
\u00a0
Abrams\u2019 dynamizer was nothing more than a \u201cblack box\u201d \u2013 an empty shell that masqueraded as something miraculous.\u00a0 Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.<\/em>

If you\u2019re tempted to think that sophisticated people in the 21st<\/sup> century could never be taken in by such a con, consider the case of Elizabeth Holmes, a 19-year-old college dropout who in 2003 launched a company called Theranos.\u00a0 Holmes claimed that her team had developed the \u201cEdison Test,\u201d which could detect serious health conditions (including cancer) with only a few drops of blood. \u00a0Needle pricks would become obsolete.

Celebrities, politicians, and well-heeled investors enthusiastically funded her efforts.\u00a0 By 2014, Theranos was valued at around $9 billion.\u00a0 Forbes<\/em> magazine christened Holmes the \u201cnext Steve Jobs.\u201d\u00a0 Time<\/em> included her on its list of the Most Influential People in the World.\u00a0

But it was all too good to be true.\u00a0
\u00a0
Just a year later, an investigative journalist revealed that the Edison Test didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Holmes had instructed her colleagues to cover up that important piece of information.\u00a0 In January this year she was convicted on four counts of defrauding investors and is now facing up to 20 years in prison.\u00a0

It\u2019s depressing to have the experience of being taken in. \u00a0Unfortunately, that\u2019s how myriads of people have felt in various places of worship.
\u00a0
It happens when priests, pastors, rabbis, and televangelists declare that only a few people can really know and understand God\u2019s secrets.\u00a0 To the rest of us they say, \u201cDon\u2019t ask questions, just believe.\u201d

If you ever hear those words, run for your life.\u00a0 Your spiritual <\/em>life.\u00a0\u00a0

Jesus made it clear that if there are such things as \u201cGod\u2019s secrets,\u201d they have become open<\/em> secrets: \u201cAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. \u00a0For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened\u201d (Matthew 7:7,8).

In other words, there are no black boxes in the kingdom of God.\u00a0 There is no privileged information.\u00a0

Everybody gets to see for himself or herself if this way of life really works.

And those who seek will find.
