{"id":2030,"date":"2022-10-07T09:43:55","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T13:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=2030"},"modified":"2022-10-07T09:43:55","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T13:43:55","slug":"spiritual-trivial-pursuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/07\/spiritual-trivial-pursuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Spiritual Trivial Pursuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2031\" width=\"406\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart-624x346.jpg 624w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BreakMyHeart.jpg 1028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=6c7399649f&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a>.<br><br>A number of years ago, author and sociologist Tony Campolo was a keynote speaker at a world missions conference in the Midwest.<br>\u00a0<br>The audience included more than 10,000 collegians and twenty-somethings who had gathered to hear inspiring calls to change the world.<br>\u00a0<br>Campolo stood at the platform and shouted, \u201cIsn\u2019t this conference <em>great?<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 A huge cheer went up from the crowd.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cWasn\u2019t that an incredible program last night?\u201d\u00a0 Even louder cheers.<br>\u00a0<br>Then Campolo said, \u201cDo you realize that within the past 24 hours at least 30,000 children have died of starvation and preventable diseases, but I bet most of you don\u2019t give a &#8212;-?\u201d\u00a0 And here he used a strong expletive.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>The crowd was stunned.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cAnd I\u2019m also willing to bet that most of you right now are more outraged that I just used that word, rather than the fact that 30,000 children have died during the past 24 hours.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Silence fell on the arena.<br>\u00a0<br>People who claim to follow Jesus can be exasperating.\u00a0 We\u2019re so good at playing Spiritual Trivial Pursuit \u2013 arguing over how much water it takes to be properly baptized, even while millions of people will go to bed hungry tonight.\u00a0 We speculate as to whether sexually broken people can go to heaven, but fail to plot strategies to bless those same people with compassion.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>We feel shocked when we hear conference speakers use expletives, but somehow miss the significance that there are more hospitals for <em>pets <\/em>in the greater Chicago area than there are hospitals for <em>people <\/em>in the entire continent of Africa.<br>\u00a0<br>Campolo would be the first to assert that what happens next matters most.<br>\u00a0<br>Should we feel guilt?\u00a0 Apathy?\u00a0 Resentment?\u00a0 Hopelessness?\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Campolo would counsel <em>resolve<\/em> \u2013 a personal resolve that is born of the hope we have in Christ, expressed in a prayer that we can choose to make our own:<br>\u00a0<br><em>Lord, break my heart with the things that break Yours.\u00a0 And beginning right where I am right now, use my life to help heal this broken world.\u00a0 For Christ&#8217;s sake, Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,\u00a0click here.
