{"id":207,"date":"2020-10-05T20:46:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T00:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=207"},"modified":"2020-12-04T21:07:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T02:07:37","slug":"locked-in-the-bathroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2020\/10\/05\/locked-in-the-bathroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Locked in the Bathroom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-208\" width=\"253\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-624x832.jpg 624w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BathroomDoor-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What is it like to hear a word from God?<br><br>It\u2019s safe to say that many of those who attend worship are hoping to hear <em>something<\/em> \u2013 perhaps an insight, a reminder, or a word of hope.<br><br>More than a dozen years ago, those attending the 8:15 am Sunday worship service at my friend Keith\u2019s congregation in Wichita, KS heard what can only be described as a clear instruction.&nbsp;<br><br>Keith, as the lead pastor, had the run of the \u201ccatacombs\u201d of his church facility \u2013 an unusual collection of hallways and rooms adjoining the pastor\u2019s study.&nbsp;<br><br>Church building committees are famous for making reality-confounding decisions.&nbsp; At some point in the past it had seemed wise to a group of earnest people to construct a private washroom for the pastor \u2013 one that had both indoor and outdoor access.&nbsp; It quickly became apparent that such a room posed a security risk.&nbsp; Outsiders could potentially enter the building through the exterior door.&nbsp; Therefore that entrance was both locked and alarmed.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>To bolster security, the interior bathroom door was also secured with a lock \u2013 from the side of the door that faced the inside of the church.&nbsp; &nbsp;Which means, if you\u2019re keeping track, it was entirely possible to enter the pastor\u2019s bath and be accidentally locked inside.&nbsp; That\u2019s exactly what happened to Keith that Sunday morning before the early service.<br><br>Should he hope someone would realize his dilemma?&nbsp; Would somebody come to rescue him?&nbsp; Should he go ahead and open the exterior door, setting off the alarm?&nbsp;<br><br>Keith, wearing his pastoral robe, had already received his lavalier mic from the worship team.&nbsp; He toggled the power switch and called to his Director of Operations.&nbsp; He remembers that he actually whispered:&nbsp; <em>\u201cMartin, come help me, I\u2019m locked in my bathroom\u201d<\/em> \u2013 a message instantaneously broadcast to all those sitting in the sanctuary.<br><br>God\u2019s people, waiting to hear a word that might change their eternal destiny, heard instead a plea to be released from washroom incarceration.&nbsp;<br><br>Needless to say, Keith and Martin received a standing ovation when they entered the sanctuary a few minutes later.<br><br>A funny thing happens when we open our hearts to receive spiritual direction from God.&nbsp; Very often what we hear doesn\u2019t sound particularly spiritual.&nbsp;<br><br><em>There\u2019s a single parent who can\u2019t pay her utility bill this month.&nbsp; It would mean the world if you could help her.&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>A friend of yours is so afraid of losing his job that he can hardly sleep.&nbsp; Why don\u2019t you grab some coffee with him?<\/em><br><em>That older neighbor you sometimes greet has barely left her house since the beginning of the pandemic.&nbsp; I bet she would welcome a phone call.&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>Instead of spending two hours surfing Netflix, think how much happier you\u2019d be if you helped distribute meals at the food bank.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/em><br><br>It turns out that few things are more godly than showing God\u2019s love in a practical way.<br><br>The Holy Spirit knows how to connect the dots between our deepest spiritual yearnings and the world\u2019s most practical needs.&nbsp;<br><br>And every time you say yes to such promptings?<br><br>You&#8217;ll be surprised how often you end up unlocking a door for someone else.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is it like to hear a word from God?
