{"id":2700,"date":"2023-06-13T07:27:36","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T11:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=2700"},"modified":"2023-06-13T07:27:36","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T11:27:36","slug":"reveille","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/13\/reveille\/","title":{"rendered":"Reveille"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/WinstonChurchill3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2701\" width=\"415\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/WinstonChurchill3.jpg 337w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/WinstonChurchill3-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to this reflection as a podcast,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=1c16487ffe&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a>.<br>\u00a0<br>Sir Winston Churchill lived what was arguably the most remarkable life of the twentieth century.<br>\u00a0<br><em>He was an unrivalled public speaker<br>A skilled oil painter<br>The winner of a Nobel Prize for Literature<br>All despite the fact he had been a mediocre student<br>He struggled to please his distant, demanding father<br>And his socialite mother rarely gave him the time of day<br>He performed heroically for the British Army in Africa<br>And his career in Parliament took off like a rocket<br>Then it all crashed to the ground when he was unfairly scapegoated<br>Powerful people blamed him for Britain\u2019s worst defeat in World War I<br>Between the wars it was assumed he was \u201cout of the game\u201d<br>He often came across as vain and impetuous<br>And there were few days without cigars, booze, and an afternoon nap<br>He was a master of clever one-liners and social repartee<br>Fearless in the face of daunting odds<br>Called into power during his nation\u2019s darkest hours in World War II<br>And under his leadership, they became Britain\u2019s finest hours<br>He was the final obstacle to total Nazi domination of Europe<br>Yet two months after winning the war, he was voted out of office<br>Then asked to become Prime Minister again six years later<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>He was overwhelmingly acclaimed, in 2000, as England\u2019s most important figure of the previous 100 years.<br>\u00a0<br>Churchill was all that and more.<br>\u00a0<br>He could be glum.\u00a0 He once groused, \u201cWe are worms.\u00a0 All worms.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Then with a smile and a wink he added, \u201cBut I do believe I am a glowworm.\u201d\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Churchill died in 1965.\u00a0 His service, which was held in St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral in London, was the largest state funeral in history up to that time.\u00a0 Representatives of 112 nations attended, and it\u2019s estimated that 10% of the world\u2019s population watched the event live on TV.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>At the end of the service a lone bugler, perched high in the dome of the cathedral, played <em>Taps.\u00a0<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>The mournful tune \u2013 \u201cday is done, day is done\u201d \u2013 signifies the end of activity in a military camp.\u00a0 The day is finished.\u00a0 <em>It\u2019s over.\u00a0<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>Just as the mourners concluded that the service was finished, another bugler began to play from the other side of the dome \u2013 an exuberant tune that Churchill himself had chosen.<br>\u00a0<br>It was <em>Reveille:\u00a0<\/em>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to get up, you\u2019ve got to get up, you\u2019ve got to get up in the morning\u2026\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Churchill was convinced that life isn\u2019t over, even when it\u2019s over.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>And Jesus\u2019 empty tomb is God\u2019s assurance that Prime Minister Glowworm wasn\u2019t just blowing his own horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to this reflection as a podcast,\u00a0click here.\u00a0Sir Winston Churchill lived what was arguably the most remarkable life of the twentieth century.\u00a0He was an unrivalled public speakerA skilled oil painterThe winner of a Nobel Prize for LiteratureAll despite the fact he had been a mediocre studentHe struggled to please his distant, demanding fatherAnd his socialite mother rarely gave him&#8230;
