{"id":3761,"date":"2024-06-21T08:21:11","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T12:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=3761"},"modified":"2024-06-21T08:22:05","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T12:22:05","slug":"the-right-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/21\/the-right-place\/","title":{"rendered":"The Right Place"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CasketTonyCampolo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3762\" width=\"423\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CasketTonyCampolo.jpg 700w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CasketTonyCampolo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CasketTonyCampolo-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=19387127e6&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a><br><br>Sociology professor and author Tony Campolo once attended the wrong funeral.<br><br>His mother had called him and said, \u201cMrs. Kirkpatrick died.&nbsp;You need to pay your respects.\u201d<br><br>As Tony puts it, \u201cMy mother, like all Italians, was big on funerals.\u201d&nbsp;So he hurried to the mortuary, where the service would begin at 2:00 pm.<br><br>He walked past the somber-faced man at the door and slipped into a seat near the casket.&nbsp;That\u2019s when he noticed something important.&nbsp;The <em>man <\/em>lying in the casket was definitely not Mrs. Kirkpatrick.&nbsp;Her funeral was evidently happening on the other side of the mortuary.<br><br>Campolo also noticed that he was one of only two people in the room.&nbsp;The other was an elderly woman sitting just a few seats away.&nbsp;She \u201creached over and grabbed me by the arm, and with desperation in her voice said, \u201cYou <em>were <\/em>his friend \u2013 weren\u2019t you?\u2019\u201d<br><br>Tony didn\u2019t know how to respond.&nbsp;He remembered that the German theologian and WW2 martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer had once said: \u201cThere comes a time in every man\u2019s life when he must lie with imagination, with vigor, and with enthusiasm!\u201d<br><br>So Tony lied.&nbsp;He told the woman that he knew her husband, and that he had always been kind to him.<br><br>What else could he do?&nbsp;He couldn\u2019t imagine saying, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I walked into the wrong funeral.&nbsp;Your husband obviously had no friends.\u201d<br><br>He sat next to the widow throughout the service.&nbsp;\u201cI wasn\u2019t about this leave this poor old lady alone in her hour of deep sadness.\u201d&nbsp;Then he accompanied her to the only car that would follow the hearse to the cemetery.<br><br>It was a long drive.<br><br>They stood together at the gravesite.&nbsp;They said some prayers.&nbsp;Then each of them threw a flower onto the casket as it was lowered into the ground.<br><br>Afterwards they drove back to the mortuary.<br><br>\u201cAs we arrived there I took this elderly woman\u2019s hand and said to her, \u2018Mrs. King, I have to tell you something.&nbsp;I really did not know your husband. I want to be your friend, and I can\u2019t be your friend after today unless I tell you the truth.&nbsp;I did not know your husband.&nbsp;I came to the funeral&nbsp;by mistake.\u2019\u201d<br><br>Campolo waited a long while, wondering how she would respond.<br><br>\u201cShe took my hand and held it for what seemed an interminable moment, then answered, \u2018You\u2019ll never ever, ever know how much your being with me meant to me today.\u2019\u201d<br><br>Tony Campolo went to the wrong funeral.<br><br>The Holy Spirit, however, made sure he arrived at the right place.<br><br>During the course of this day, you may end up in what feels like the worst meeting, the least helpful conversation, or the most frustrating circumstances imaginable.<br><br>Trust the Spirit.&nbsp;<br><br>You go nowhere by accident.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;click here Sociology professor and author Tony Campolo once attended the wrong funeral.
