{"id":3880,"date":"2024-08-01T07:12:39","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T11:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=3880"},"modified":"2024-08-01T07:13:37","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T11:13:37","slug":"go-deeper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/01\/go-deeper\/","title":{"rendered":"Go Deeper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TimKellerOpenBible.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3881\" width=\"456\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TimKellerOpenBible.jpg 928w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TimKellerOpenBible-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TimKellerOpenBible-768x364.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TimKellerOpenBible-624x296.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=ecab25d098&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a><br><br>The late author and pastor Tim Keller recalls a conference breakout session that changed his life.<br><br>A presenter named Barbara Boyd promised some tips on reading the Bible \u2013 not a particularly cutting-edge subject.<br><br>Boyd provided these instructions:&nbsp;\u201cSit for 30 minutes and write down at least 30 things you learn from Mark 1:17.\u201d<br><br>Mark 1:17 just so happens to be one of those verses that pastors can mumble in their sleep.&nbsp;\u201c\u2019Come, follow me,\u2019 Jesus said, \u2018and I will make you fishers of men.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;Jesus told a group of fishermen they should start trawling for people.<br><br>Yeah, that\u2019s nice.&nbsp; We\u2019ve all heard that one for years.<br><br>\u201cDon\u2019t think,\u201d Boyd went on, \u201cthat after 10 minutes and four or five things written down that you\u2019ve figured it out.&nbsp;Take the whole 30 minutes and try to get to 30 things observed.\u201d&nbsp;Keller decided to give it a shot.<br><br>He and the others in the room silently picked their way over, around, and through those familiar words.<br><br>After about 10 minutes, true to Boyd\u2019s prediction, Keller put down his pen.&nbsp;He was pretty sure he had seen everything there was to see.<br><br>\u201cI wanted to spend the rest of the time daydreaming, but everybody else looked like they were still working, so I picked up the pen and started pondering some more.<br><br>\u201cThen I began to notice some new things.&nbsp;If I imagined what the sentence would mean <em>without<\/em> one of its words, it was easier to assess what unique meaning it brought to the sentence.&nbsp;That gave me the ability to get another two or three insights around each term.<br><br>\u201cThen I tried to paraphrase the whole verse, putting it into my own words.&nbsp;That showed me more levels of meaning and implications that I had missed.\u201d<br><br>At the end of the half hour, Boyd asked everyone in the group to circle the best insight or most life-changing observation they had gleaned from the text.<br><br>\u201cOK,\u201d she said, \u201chow many of you found this most incredible, life-changing thing in the first five minutes?\u201d<br><br>No one raised a hand.<br><br>\u201cTen minutes?\u201d&nbsp;No hands.&nbsp;\u201cFifteen minutes?\u201d&nbsp;A few hands.&nbsp;\u201cTwenty minutes?\u201d&nbsp;A few more.&nbsp;\u201cTwenty-five minutes?\u201d&nbsp;Many more.<br><br>Keller reflects, \u201cThat session changed my attitude toward the Bible and, indeed, my life.\u201d<br><br>We live in a culture in which people expect that a few quick glances will yield truth.&nbsp;<br><br>Go deeper.&nbsp;<br>Look longer.&nbsp;<br>Stop texting and keep digging.<br>Don\u2019t rush through your opportunity to learn something new today.<br><br>Life is so much richer if we take the time to hear, really hear, what God might be saying to us.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;click here The late author and pastor Tim Keller recalls a conference breakout session that changed his life.
