{"id":3915,"date":"2024-08-15T07:07:05","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T11:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=3915"},"modified":"2024-08-15T07:07:57","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T11:07:57","slug":"from-intimacy-to-outimacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/15\/from-intimacy-to-outimacy\/","title":{"rendered":"From Intimacy to Outimacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/EdDebevicsFirstPicture.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3916\" width=\"446\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/EdDebevicsFirstPicture.jpg 334w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/EdDebevicsFirstPicture-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=6701467226&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a><br><br><em>Eat and Get Out.<\/em><br><br>That\u2019s the slogan at Ed Debevic\u2019s, which since 1984 has been one of Chicago\u2019s iconic restaurants.<br><br>Ed\u2019s is a not a subtle dining experience.<br><br>The cuisine appears to have been tele-transported from the 1950s \u2013 huge burgers, hand-dipped shakes, jumbo hot dogs, and cheese fries.&nbsp;<br><br>The servers are loud, abrasive, and snarky.&nbsp;They wear ludicrous costumes and adopt various high school personas \u2013 from jocks to nerds to wisecrackers.&nbsp;<em>\u201cWhaddya want?\u201d <\/em>they might ask when taking your order.&nbsp;<br><br>As Ed\u2019s own website points out, \u201cDon\u2019t expect this diner to be a \u2018please\u2019 and \u2018thank you\u2019 kind of place.\u201d<br><br>Every table gets a complimentary basket of homemade chips.&nbsp;Once I made the mistake of asking my server if we could have a refill.&nbsp;\u201cYou got those for <em>free!<\/em>\u201d he shouted, making sure the whole restaurant could hear.&nbsp;\u201cYou think I\u2019m really going to give you <em>more<\/em>?\u201d We never got our refill.&nbsp;But the drama was definitely fun.<br><br>Ed\u2019s usually has a long line of customers waiting for a seat.&nbsp;Occasionally a staff member will get on the P.A. system and say something like, \u201cHope you\u2019re having a great time, everyone.&nbsp;Now, if you\u2019re finished, <em>get out.<\/em>&nbsp;We\u2019re trying to make some money here!\u201d&nbsp;<br><br>Best of all, from time to time the servers drop their trays and jump up on the counter, dancing to raucous songs like The Village People\u2019s classic <em>YMCA.<\/em><br><br>No wonder people drive hundreds of miles just to be insulted and to gorge themselves on items that are not associated with a standard cardiologist\u2019s recommended diet.<br><br>Faithful fans groaned when Ed Debevic\u2019s closed its doors at its original North Shore site in 2015. Sanity (and Ed\u2019s) was finally restored when they launched a new Chicago location six years later.<br><br>When you think about it, <em>Eat and Get Out <\/em>would be a great slogan for followers of Jesus, too.<br><br>Jesus calls his followers to share a common table \u2013 literally and figuratively.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>We should sit down together.&nbsp;And encourage each other. We should listen well, wrestle with hard questions, and deal compassionately with each other\u2019s weaknesses.<br><br>Ed\u2019s offers fullness of a particular kind. So does Jesus: \u201cThese things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full\u201d (John 15:11).<br><br>But after we feast on spiritual fellowship, it\u2019s time to get out.&nbsp;Intimacy should be followed, as author John Ortberg suggests, by \u201coutimacy.\u201d<br><br>We should get out into the world.&nbsp;Out into the battle.&nbsp;Out into the muddle and chaos of a culture where politics, entertainment, social issues, and religion seem to divide people more often than unite them.&nbsp;<br><br>It\u2019s wonderful to have a place at the table.<br><br>But after we eat together, filling ourselves with the fullness and joy of the grace of God, there\u2019s one last thing we need to say to each other:<br><br><em>Out you go!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><br><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;click here Eat and Get Out.
