{"id":3988,"date":"2024-09-10T07:26:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T11:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=3988"},"modified":"2024-09-10T07:27:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T11:27:58","slug":"speaking-truthfully","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/10\/speaking-truthfully\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaking Truthfully"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3989\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop-624x416.jpg 624w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/LecraeHipHop.jpg 1108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=c4927dfbefb9749e5fef1581d&amp;id=160fab9036&amp;e=5cd2a880e9\">click here<\/a><br><br><em>Christian Hip Hop.<\/em><br><br>That can\u2019t be right.&nbsp;<br><br>That sounds like either watered-down, preachy rap music, or some kind of culturally compromised Christianity.&nbsp;<br><br>But the albums of the rapper Lecrae are neither.&nbsp;What they are is artistically brilliant.<br><br>The first 20 years of Lecrae Moore\u2019s life weren\u2019t substantially different from those of other prominent hip hop artists.&nbsp;<br><br>He grew up the child of a single mother in Houston; admired family members who became gangsters; consumed a smorgasbord of drugs; dropped in and out of a never-ending series of relationships; and ultimately concluded that life was little more than a sick joke.&nbsp;<br><br>But Lecrae loved music.&nbsp;The urban poetry of rap became his way to make sense of reality.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>He came to faith at an urban conference in Atlanta.&nbsp;His pathway to spiritual maturity, however, was anything but smooth.<br><br>In his autobiography <em>Unashamed, <\/em>Lecrae recounts being arrested on suspicion of drug possession \u2013 <em>after<\/em> his conversion.<br><br>There was a large bag of weed sitting in plain sight on the front seat of his car.&nbsp;In the back seat was his Bible \u2013 underlined and dog-eared. The arresting officer asked Lecrae, \u201cIs that your Bible?\u201d&nbsp;When he answered yes, the cop let him go \u2013 and urged him to keep reading it.<br><br>Lecrae did. Ultimately he concluded that living with half-hearted commitment to Christ was no way to live at all.<br><br>He threw himself into composing, singing, record producing, and social activism.&nbsp;<br><br>From a musical standpoint, Lecrae has simply killed it.&nbsp;<br><br>His first mixtape, <em>Church Clothes<\/em>, was downloaded over 100,000 times in less than 48 hours.&nbsp;His follow-up album <em>Gravity<\/em> debuted as the best-selling album overall in the iTunes Store.&nbsp;He was the first rap artist ever to win a Grammy in the Gospel category.&nbsp;And his album <em>Anomaly <\/em>topped the Billboard 200 and Gospel charts simultaneously, something never before achieved by any artist. Along the way he became a strong public advocate not only for racial understanding, but for \u201cresponsibility and fatherhood\u201d in the lives of American men.<br><br>His greatest challenge has come from the two different worlds he appears to represent.&nbsp;Does he belong more to the restless streets of hip hop or the stuffy sanctuaries of religion?<br><br>For years it drove him crazy.&nbsp;Rappers wouldn\u2019t take him seriously as an artist because he was a Christian.&nbsp;And Christians wouldn\u2019t accept him as \u201cone of us\u201d because he refused to mention Jesus or quote a Bible verse in every song.&nbsp;<br><br>Lecrae finally landed in the middle \u2013 a place that will never entirely satisfy the people at either extreme.&nbsp;<br><br>\u201cMy music is not Christian,\u201d he says.&nbsp;\u201cBut Lecrae is.\u201d&nbsp;In other words, he\u2019s a hip hop artist.&nbsp;Hip hop isn\u2019t religious or irreligious.&nbsp;It\u2019s just music.&nbsp;<br><br>But Lecrae the artist \/ composer \/ performer is absolutely sold out to the idea that Jesus rules the cosmos.&nbsp;That conviction has become the deep background of his life, something that shines through everything he creates.<br><br>Lecrae has identified the late theologian Francis Schaeffer as his personal hero.&nbsp;<br><br>Schaeffer taught that the role of the artist who follows Jesus is to speak <em>truthfully<\/em> about the nature of things.&nbsp;Everything doesn\u2019t have to be a sermon.&nbsp;Sculptors, painters, musicians, dancers, and actors are uniquely empowered to move human minds and hearts \u2013 not only to perceive the ugliness and pain that persists in our broken world, but also to glimpse the hope that can be ours in Christ.<br><br>The apostle Paul speaks of the way in which every aspect of life can become a redemptive choice: <em>\u201cLet every detail in your lives\u2014words, actions, whatever\u2014be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way\u201d<\/em> (Colossians 3:17).<br><br>Lecrae raps about problems \u2013 especially the unrelenting problems of urban existence for so many people.&nbsp;He can do that because he\u2019s lived it.<br><br>But he also raps about trusting a Problem Solver who is equal to anything human beings will ever have to face.<br><br>He\u2019s lived that, too.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To listen to today&#8217;s reflection as a podcast,&nbsp;click here Christian Hip Hop.
