{"id":917,"date":"2021-08-06T08:44:11","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/js1cd06kre.onrocket.site\/?p=917"},"modified":"2021-08-06T08:44:11","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:44:11","slug":"conversation-not-condemnation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/index.php\/2021\/08\/06\/conversation-not-condemnation\/","title":{"rendered":"Conversation, Not Condemnation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-918\" width=\"294\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare.jpg 640w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare-624x622.jpg 624w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare-176x176.jpg 176w, https:\/\/glennsreflections.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BlackSquare-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be hard to fathom, but the image above is one of the most famous paintings in the history of art.<br><br>If you\u2019ve ever strolled through a museum of modern art, you\u2019ve probably thought, \u201cMy six-year-old could do that!\u201d&nbsp;<br><br>Or in the case of <em>Black<\/em><em>Square<\/em> by Kazimir Malevich:&nbsp; \u201cHow is that different from my printer\u2019s test pattern when I install a new cartridge?\u201d<br><br>But Malevich (1879-1935), who was one of the most celebrated painters of the Soviet Union, was making an entirely serious statement about reality.&nbsp; He launched an artistic movement called Suprematism.&nbsp; He was convinced of the <em>supremacy <\/em>of geometric forms \u2013 especially the square and the circle \u2013 to create \u201cpure artistic feelings\u201d that would help us understand the meaning of the universe.<br><br>In 1913 he hand-painted a black square onto a canvas.&nbsp; Malevich later wrote, \u201cI have transformed myself in the zero of form.\u201d<br><br><em>Um, would you mind running that past us one more time?<\/em><br><br>Those words appear to be his way of saying, \u201cI\u2019ve gone as far as I can possibly go.&nbsp; I\u2019ve taken the elevator all the way down to the basement.&nbsp; There\u2019s nothing more basic than a black square.&nbsp; This is Ground Zero.&nbsp; This is the first letter in a new alphabet of ultimate meaning.\u201d<br><br>And what did Malevich end up with?<br><br>No beauty.&nbsp; No color.&nbsp; No mystery. &nbsp;No message.&nbsp; No hope.&nbsp; Just a square, about which you can feel whatever you want.&nbsp; Since Malevich believed there was no fixed meaning to the cosmos, <em>Black Square <\/em>can mean anything.&nbsp; Or nothing.<br><br>Malevich hoped his masterpiece would help him search for God.&nbsp; Or perhaps reveal that he was the creator of his own life and his own meaning.<br><br>There are a million Velvet Elvis paintings hanging in American family rooms, and countless prints of dogs playing poker.&nbsp; <em>Black Square <\/em>is still searching for an audience.&nbsp; Modern art tends to make most people shrug or scoff or squint or laugh out loud.<br><br>The late theologian Francis Schaeffer suggested a different response:&nbsp; <em>First we need to weep<\/em>.&nbsp; We must do our best to understand the questions raised by gifted artists, and to feel the agony of their search for truth.<br><br>And that should lead to a conversation, not to condemnation.&nbsp;<br><br>It\u2019s worth noting that two of the most significant verses in the Bible, one in the Old Testament and one in the New, both begin with the same word:&nbsp; \u201c<strong>Come<\/strong>, let us reason together, says the Lord\u2026\u201d (Isaiah 1:18); and \u201c<strong>Come<\/strong> to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden\u2026\u201d (Matthew 11:28, Jesus speaking).&nbsp;<br><br>God invites all of us into a conversation:&nbsp; Does life have an actual meaning, or do we have to invent one for ourselves?<br><br><em>Come.&nbsp;<\/em><br><br>Let\u2019s see where that conversation leads.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It may be hard to fathom, but the image above is one of the most famous paintings in the history of art.
