Conrad Hilton, founder of the hotel empire that bears his name, was once Johnny Carson’s guest on The Tonight Show.
At one point Carson said, “If you could look into that camera and say just one thing to America, what would it be?”
Hilton turned and looked into the camera.
He said, “Please remember to put the shower curtain on the inside of the tub.”
Given the chance to say anything, Hilton chose this: Be considerate of other people.
That’s at the heart of Philippians 2:3-4: “In humility value others above yourselves. Don’t look only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Be considerate today.
Be patient in traffic.
Arrive at your meeting on time.
Listen to others before speaking.
Hold the elevator for someone.
Pick up that scrap of paper.
Straighten the jostled items on the grocery shelf.
Wash the dishes even when it isn’t your turn.
Maybe you didn’t wake up in the Hilton this morning.
But all of us wake up, every day, to a world that will be a better place if we choose to be considerate.
